SAIL to make Lodhi Garden `stainless'
By deepali, Section SAIL NEWS Posted on Tue Aug 16, 2005 at 07:05:09 AM EST
From Asia's best urban oasis, Lodhi Garden could soon get a "stainless" finish. The Archaeological Survey of India (ASI) is signing an MoU with the Steel Authority of India Limited for the "preservation, conservation and maintenance" of the Lodhi-period monuments here. An amount of Rs 1 crore will come from the deal and be used to give some much-required uplift to Sikandar Lodhi's tomb, Sheesh Gumbad, Bada Gumbad, Mohammad Shah's tomb and Athpula, the last of the few Akbar period buildings in Delhi.
"Sail is also keen to take up work on some other monuments. While we are yet to identify the other sites, the draft MoU for Lodhi Garden has been sent to us for examination. This is a welcome move," ASI D-G, C Babu Rajeev told TOI. The monuments here are in urgent need of some repairs like having missing chajja stones replaced. The domes of some tombs have gone black with time. Walkers point out that the chattris of the enclosed Sikandar Lodhi tomb here have become unstable and need to be fixed. "The beautiful Athpula is flanked by a coaltar road on both sides. This does not gel with the character of this stone bridge," said a walker. While experts welcome this move to involve corporates in saving the built heritage, they point out the pact with Sail is coming under the National Culture Fund that was formed for this purpose by the ministry of culture some years ago and did not work in Delhi. That time, the ASI had signed an MoU with a oil major PSU for the Qutab Minar. Maybe the fresh air of Lodhi Garden can infuse some fresh life in the stillborn NCF.
